What Time Should Your Child Go to Bed?

Bedtime is an especially important part of the day but can also be quite stressful. To decrease the challenges caused by rushing or being inconsistent, create structure. It’s a great way to make bedtime feel easier and maintain a strong bond with your child.

Having a routine helps to make the experience much less stressful and will ensure your child gets the appropriate amount of sleep. This is critical to supporting their healthy development. The biggest choice you must make is—what time?

Age is a key factor.

Young children need ample sleep to recharge, grow, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, the amount of sleep each child needs to thrive varies between birth to the age of five.

Infants need a lot of sleep. Follow their cues and allow them to sleep when needed throughout the day. As children get older, the amount of sleep they need decreases.

On average, children between the ages of 2 and 5 should get about 10 to 12 hours of sleep per day (including naps). With that goal in mind, setting a bedtime between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. will allow you to implement a routine and set your child up for a successful night of sleep.

Although 10 to 12 hours of sleep per day is average, every child’s needs are different. If you’re wondering if your child is getting enough sleep, here are a few questions to consider:

  • Is your child having trouble paying attention throughout the day?
  • Does your child seem irritable or extra impulsive with their behaviors?
  • Does your child seem “moody?” Are they struggling to regulate their emotions?
  • Does your child’s energy level seem low? Are they more quiet than usual?

If you said yes to any of these behaviors or changes, it may be a sign that your child requires a little more sleep. Adjust their bedtime routine accordingly to better fit their needs. Doing so will ensure your child is getting the proper amount of sleep they need to thrive. Do what’s best for your child and family. There is no perfect answer, but you’ll see the benefits when you find the perfect time.

Next month, we’ll share a few tips about how to establish a calming bedtime routine. You and your child will both rest much easier without stressing over bedtime. Until then, sweet dreams!
